Free versions of the Flashcard app are updated!

After solving some issues regarding the ads I’ve included in the free version, I’ve finally published these in Google Play! Hopefully everyone who reads this blog can take a few seconds and download their language of preference and give me their feedback:

This closes a pretty important update cycle for these apps, and I’m hoping the improvements are significant enough to cause a bump in revenue (both from sales of the Pro version and in ads). We’ll have to give it a few weeks to see. I’m also hoping this will be the last major update to this app. I’ve been working on this app for about a year now, and I’m eager to pursue new app ideas.

Announcing a new language: Russian!

I’ve had this in the works for a while, and didn’t want to release this language until the updates were ready, so yesterday I was finally able to publish the Russian flashcards! If you’re feeling a little rusty on your Russian, you can pick this up here:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rfxlabs.languageflashcards.russianpro

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rfxlabs.languageflashcards.russianfree

Any other language you’re keen on learning?

What’s next?

Feels great to have another app that I feel is mature (enough). So what’s next?

Upload to other app stores

The first thing I’m going to do is to upload the apps into several different app stores, to hopefully reach a greater amount of users. Each app store has different asset requirements, and if you multiply that by 7 languages, this means this process will take some time.

Update the Electrician Calculator Pro

I’m also in the process of updating the Electrician Calculator Pro, to include the 2011 version of the National Electrical Code. This shouldn’t take as long as the Flashcard app updates, though.

Start a new app!

I’m eager to start something new! I have several ideas floating around, and I’m analyzing which I’m ready to commit to. More on this soon.

Work on this blog

I’m thinking of the direction I want to take this blog. I’m hoping to improve it to make it as useful as possible. Any suggestions on this front?

Hi just found your blog and have been reading your posts and i have question, being you a electrical engineer you probably had some background in programming, but what about design?? I saw your website about electrician calculator pro and its very well done as well as your app’s design. Did your learn by your self to design beautiful websites and apps as well? I ask this because i have some good programming background and want to enter android world but i really suck at the design department :(

Anyway congratulations for your achievements :)

      Hey, thanks for reading!
I don’t have formal studies in design, but when I’m programming I normally have an idea of how I want it to end up visually and after a bunch of iterations can get it pretty close. However I am very far from being really proficient in this, I depend entirely on Photoshop tutorials for getting images how I want them, etc.

You should notice that not all apps have the same user interface requirements, and some should be simple and others more complex. For example the flashcard app’s user interface is pretty flashy, with the card that flips, the flag in the background, etc. while the Electrician Calculator’s interface is simpler and straight-to-business. So you could actually prefer a simple design, depending on your app and the public you want to target.

I didn’t make the Electrician Calculator’s website design myself, but purchased it as a template from ThemeForest.net and just edited it for my app. In general, not being as good as you want in the design department shouldn’t stop you from creating apps (or websites). You can buy a template (there are tons of free and paid templates), team up with a designer, or hire one.
